Thinking About Learning Reiki? What to Expect from Reiki Training in North Devon
Have you ever experienced a Reiki treatment and wondered what it would be like to learn it for yourself?
Perhaps you've always been curious about energy work, you're interested in exploring your spiritual development, or you simply love the idea of having a practice you can turn to whenever you need some time for yourself.
One of the things I love about Reiki is that you don't need to have any previous experience to begin learning. You don't need to be particularly spiritual, have a special gift or know anything about energy healing.
You can simply be curious.
I'm Jill, a Reiki Master Teacher based in Northam, near Bideford in North Devon, and I offer personalised Reiki training for people who want to learn, explore and build their confidence in working with Reiki.
But I think there's something important worth understanding before you book a course.
Learning Reiki isn't just about what happens during your training days. It's about what you do with it afterwards.
What actually is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese practice traditionally associated with Mikao Usui. It involves gentle hand placements, meditation and working with what practitioners describe as universal life energy.
Within the Reiki tradition, it's believed that this energy can support balance and wellbeing. While these energy concepts haven't been scientifically established, many people enjoy Reiki as a relaxing, reflective practice.
You might have experienced Reiki during a treatment, perhaps noticing a sense of warmth, deep relaxation or simply enjoying the opportunity to stop and be still for a while.
Learning Reiki gives you the opportunity to explore the practice for yourself rather than only experiencing it through someone else.
And you don't have to want to become a practitioner to benefit from learning.
Why do people decide to learn Reiki?
People come to Reiki training for all sorts of reasons, and I think that's part of what makes teaching it so interesting.
Some people have experienced Reiki treatments and want to understand more about what happens during a session.
Others have reached a point in their lives where they're becoming more interested in self-awareness, spirituality or taking better care of their own wellbeing.
Some are already working in complementary therapies and would like to add Reiki to their existing skills.
And others simply feel drawn to it without necessarily knowing why.
There doesn't have to be a grand reason.
You might just want to learn something for yourself, and that's more than enough.
Reiki Level 1: Learning for yourself
Reiki Level 1 is where everyone begins.
It's very much about developing your own relationship with the practice, learning the foundations and becoming comfortable using Reiki for yourself.
During Level 1 training, we explore the history and principles of Reiki, the traditional energy system, hand positions and how to give yourself and others a basic Reiki treatment.
You'll also receive your Reiki attunement, which is a traditional part of Reiki training.
But one of the most important aspects of Level 1, in my view, is what happens after you've learned the basics.
The importance of your 21-day Reiki practice
Following your initial training, you'll begin a period of 21 days of self-practice and reflection, sometimes referred to within Reiki traditions as the 21-day cleanse.
I prefer to think of this as an opportunity to become familiar with Reiki and notice your own experiences, rather than expecting any particular physical or emotional transformation.
You might begin to notice how easy or difficult you find it to make time for yourself, whether your mind settles during practice, or simply how much you enjoy having a little space in your day.
There isn't a right way to experience it.
This is also why I don't believe Reiki training should be rushed.
You need an opportunity to practise, reflect, ask questions and gradually build confidence rather than feeling you have to understand everything immediately.
Reiki Level 2: Deepening your practice
Once you've completed Level 1 and had time to develop your personal practice, you may decide you'd like to continue to Reiki Level 2.
This is where we begin exploring Reiki in greater depth.
You'll learn the traditional Reiki symbols, techniques for distance Reiki and how to develop your skills when working with other people.
For some students, Level 2 is a natural continuation of their personal development.
For others, it's a step towards eventually offering Reiki professionally.
If you're thinking about working with paying clients, it's important to understand that completing Level 2 is not necessarily the same as meeting all the requirements for professional registration or working within healthcare settings. Further practical experience, professional training, insurance and applicable standards may be needed.
I think this is an important distinction because I want people to develop genuine confidence and experience, not just collect qualifications.
Why I believe Reiki training needs more than a certificate
One of the things I've thought about a lot as a Reiki teacher is how easy it can be to learn something new, feel really enthusiastic about it and then gradually stop using it.
Life gets busy, other things take priority and before you know it, your Reiki manual is sitting on a shelf.
And that seems such a shame.
Not because there's anything wrong with deciding Reiki isn't for you, but because I think the real value in learning a practice comes from giving yourself the opportunity to explore it properly.
You don't become comfortable with Reiki simply because you've attended a course.
You build confidence by practising.
By asking questions.
By discovering what works for you.
By sometimes feeling uncertain and gradually becoming more familiar with what you're doing.
That's why I want my teaching to be about more than simply covering a syllabus and handing you a certificate at the end.
I want you to leave knowing what you've learned, how to continue practising and what your next steps might look like.
What makes my Reiki training different?
I offer Reiki training in a relaxed, supportive environment at my home practice in Northam, near Bideford.
My approach is personal rather than one-size-fits-all.
With one-to-one training, we can work at your pace, giving you plenty of opportunity to ask questions, practise techniques and explore anything you're unsure about.
I also offer small group training, which can be a lovely experience if you enjoy learning alongside others or would like to train with friends.
A particularly important part of my approach is allowing time between learning and reflection, rather than expecting everything to happen in one continuous session.
Your training includes practical learning, a Reiki manual, attunements, a certificate of completion and guidance as you continue developing your practice.
I want you to understand not only how to use Reiki, but how to make it something you feel comfortable returning to.
Because ultimately, it's your practice, and it needs to work for you.
Do you need to be spiritual to learn Reiki?
No, although Reiki does have spiritual and philosophical roots.
You might be fascinated by energy, intuition and consciousness, or you might simply be interested in learning a relaxing practice.
Both are perfectly valid starting points.
You don't need to share all my beliefs or experiences, and I certainly don't expect everybody to approach Reiki in the same way.
I think curiosity and an open mind are far more valuable than feeling you need to believe something particular before you begin.
And you can take from the experience what feels meaningful to you.
Can you learn Reiki just for yourself?
Absolutely.
In fact, I think this is one of the most overlooked reasons for learning Reiki.
There's often an assumption that if you're going to invest in training, you need to turn it into something professional.
But you don't.
You might choose to learn Reiki because you enjoy meditation, want to develop a regular self-care practice or would like to share Reiki with family and friends.
You may never want to offer treatments professionally, and that's completely fine.
Equally, if you do eventually decide you'd like to continue through the levels and explore professional practice, that possibility is there too.
There's no rush to decide.

A final thought
I think sometimes we can become so focused on learning something, achieving the qualification or reaching the next level that we forget to give ourselves time to actually enjoy the experience.
Reiki doesn't need to become another thing on your to-do list.
You don't have to become a practitioner, build a business or reach Master level for your training to have been worthwhile.
Perhaps you simply want to learn something new, become more comfortable making time for yourself or explore a subject that has interested you for years.
Whatever brings you to Reiki, I believe the most valuable part is what you take away and continue to use in your own life.
Because learning Reiki is one thing. Developing a practice that stays with you is something else entirely.
