Perimenopause Support in North Devon: Where Can I Turn for Help?

Perimenopause Support in North Devon: Where Can I Turn for Help?

Perhaps you've reached your early or mid-forties and suddenly things feel a little different. You're not sleeping as well as you used to, your anxiety seems to have appeared from nowhere, your patience is wearing thin and, if you're really honest, you don't quite feel like yourself anymore.

Or perhaps you've been feeling this way for a while, putting it down to stress, a busy family life or simply having too much on your plate.

For many women, perimenopause can be a surprisingly unsettling time, particularly when the changes aren't the ones we've traditionally associated with menopause.

If you're looking for perimenopause support in Bideford, Barnstaple or the wider North Devon area, there are several places you can turn, from your GP and specialist menopause services to NHS talking therapies and complementary wellbeing support.

And you don't need to wait until things feel unbearable before asking for help.

Could it be perimenopause?

Perimenopause is the transitional stage leading up to menopause, when hormone levels begin to fluctuate. It often starts in your forties, although some women notice changes earlier.

We tend to associate menopause with hot flushes and periods stopping, but the experience can be much broader than that.

You might notice changes in your sleep, increased anxiety, brain fog, low mood, irritability, night sweats or simply feeling less able to cope with things that previously wouldn't have bothered you.

Of course, not every symptom in your forties is caused by perimenopause. Stress, thyroid problems, other health conditions and the demands of everyday life can cause similar experiences, which is why it's important not to assume everything is hormonal.

But if you've noticed a change in how you're feeling, it's worth exploring.

1. Start with your GP

Your GP is a good first point of contact if you think you might be experiencing perimenopause.

They can discuss your symptoms, consider other possible causes and talk through treatment options, including hormone replacement therapy (HRT), where appropriate.

If you're over 45, perimenopause can often be identified through your symptoms and changes in your menstrual cycle without the need for routine hormone blood tests. If you're younger, or your symptoms are unusual, further assessment may be needed.

One thing I'd encourage you to do before your appointment is write down what you've been experiencing.

Not just changes to your periods, but your sleep, mood, anxiety levels, concentration and anything else that feels different.

Sometimes it's much easier to explain what's happening when you've had a little time to gather your thoughts beforehand.

2. Specialist menopause support in Devon

Some women need more specialised support, particularly when symptoms are complex, existing health conditions make treatment decisions more difficult, or initial treatments haven't provided the relief they'd hoped for.

The Devon Menopause Service, provided through Devon Sexual Health and the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, supports patients with complex menopause needs.

The service is staffed by a British Menopause Society-accredited team and accepts GP referrals for eligible patients. It can also provide specialist advice to GPs.

You cannot refer yourself directly, so speak to your GP if you feel specialist input may be appropriate.

You can find further information through the Devon Menopause Service.

3. Support for anxiety, low mood and sleep difficulties

Sometimes the most difficult part of perimenopause isn't the physical symptoms but how much they affect your everyday life.

You might find yourself worrying more than usual, waking in the middle of the night with your mind racing, struggling with your confidence or feeling overwhelmed by situations you would once have managed quite comfortably.

If this sounds familiar, you may find TALKWORKS, Devon's free NHS talking therapies service, helpful.

They support adults experiencing anxiety, low mood, stress and sleep difficulties, including stress related to menopause.

There are local service locations in Bideford and Barnstaple, alongside telephone and online appointments. You can refer yourself without needing to visit your GP first.

Visit TALKWORKS or call 0300 555 3344.

For some women, menopause-specific cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) can also be helpful with symptoms such as sleep difficulties associated with night sweats. Your GP can discuss appropriate options with you.

4. Looking after your wellbeing during perimenopause

Alongside medical support, it's worth considering how you're looking after yourself more generally.

And I don't just mean eating well, getting some exercise and trying to go to bed earlier, although those things certainly matter.

I'm talking about the space you give yourself to rest, how much you're carrying emotionally, the expectations you place on yourself and whether your own needs have slowly slipped to the bottom of the list.

For many women, midlife happens alongside other significant changes. Children are growing up, relationships are evolving, ageing parents may need more support, careers can feel different and sometimes we're beginning to question what we actually want from the next stage of life.

Not everything you're experiencing will necessarily be hormonal, and not every difficulty needs to be unpacked or analysed.

Sometimes you need practical medical support. Sometimes you need proper rest. Sometimes you need someone to listen. Often, it's a combination of things.

5. Holistic perimenopause and midlife wellbeing support in North Devon

I'm Jill, a Clinical Reflexologist and Reiki Master Practitioner based in Northam, near Bideford, and I work with women who are navigating perimenopause, menopause and the changes that often come with midlife.

Something I've noticed through my work is that women rarely arrive with just one thing going on.

They might initially contact me because they're feeling anxious, struggling with sleep, constantly exhausted or simply needing some time to themselves. But as we talk, there are often other things happening too.

Perhaps they've spent years looking after everybody else, they're going through a difficult transition or they've reached a point where the way they've always done things no longer feels right.

My approach isn't about offering a quick fix or assuming every difficulty can be explained by hormones.

And while reflexology and Reiki can offer a relaxing and supportive experience, they aren't substitutes for medical menopause treatment, and evidence that they directly treat menopause symptoms is limited.

What I can offer is somewhere you can slow down, feel listened to and have some space to consider what you need.

Where do we begin?

For women who would like to explore their wellbeing more deeply, I offer a Synergy Pattern Assessment.

This is a two-hour appointment where we take time to look at what has been happening for you, how you're feeling physically and emotionally, and any recurring patterns that may be affecting your wellbeing.

We combine an in-depth conversation with hands-on therapeutic work, drawing on clinical reflexology, Reiki and my wider holistic approach.

It's not a medical assessment or a way of diagnosing hormonal conditions. It's an opportunity to look at your wellbeing from a broader perspective and identify areas where you might benefit from additional support, whether that's through our work together or with other professionals.

You can read more about the Synergy Pattern Assessment here.

You don't have to navigate midlife alone

Whether you're in your late thirties, forties or fifties, perimenopause can bring changes that you weren't quite expecting.

For some women, it's relatively straightforward. For others, it can affect almost every part of their lives.

There isn't one right way to approach it, and you don't have to choose between medical treatment and taking care of your wider wellbeing. Different forms of support can work alongside one another.

If you're in Bideford, Barnstaple, Torrington, Braunton or elsewhere in North Devon and you're beginning to wonder whether perimenopause could be contributing to how you're feeling, start by getting the information and support you need.

And if you feel you'd benefit from some dedicated time to focus on yourself, you're very welcome to explore the support I offer at Wellbeing Natural Therapies.

Sometimes the first step is simply recognising that you need a little support too.
