When Healing Becomes About Moving Forward: Future You Work
There often comes a point in the healing journey where understanding the past is no longer the only focus. For many people, the early stages of healing are about making sense of what has happened, recognising old beliefs, understanding emotional patterns, and beginning to see how past experiences may still be shaping the present.
This work matters. It can be incredibly validating to finally understand why certain situations feel so difficult, why the body responds with tension or overwhelm, or why the same patterns seem to repeat in relationships, work, money, health, or self-worth. For many women, especially during perimenopause and midlife, this kind of self-awareness can be an important turning point.
But there can also be another stage of healing that is less about looking back and more about asking what comes next.
This does not mean ignoring the past or bypassing what has happened. It means recognising that once we have spent time understanding where we have come from, the next part of the work may be about learning how to move forward in a different way. This is where Future You work can become so useful.
What is Future You work?
Future You work is a gentle but practical way of exploring the person you are becoming. It is not about forcing an instant transformation or trying to become a completely different person overnight. It is about beginning to understand how you want to feel, what kind of life you want to create, what habits would support you, what boundaries may need to change, and what small daily choices could help you move towards a more grounded, fulfilled version of yourself.
The work is gradual. It is not about changing everything at once. It is about moving forward by 1%, then another 1%, then another. Over time, those small shifts can begin to change how you feel, how you respond, and how you relate to yourself.
Future You work can include reflection, journaling, visualisation, meditation, EFT-style prompts, practical anchors, and small weekly tasks. The aim is not to create pressure, but to bring more awareness to the direction you are moving in and the choices that support that direction.
Why this stage of healing can be important
It is possible to spend a long time understanding why we are the way we are. That understanding can be powerful, but at some stage, awareness alone may not feel enough. A person may understand their patterns very well, but still feel unsure how to move beyond them.
This is often where people can feel stuck. They may have done a lot of inner work, read the books, had the conversations, explored the past, and become very aware of their wounds, beliefs, and emotional responses. Yet daily life may still feel heavy, repetitive, or limited by old patterns.
Future You work helps to shift the focus from only asking “Why am I like this?” to also asking “What would support me now?”
That question changes the direction of the work. It brings the focus back to choice, responsibility, and small steps forward. It acknowledges the past without making the past the whole story.
Future You work during perimenopause and midlife
Many women reach this point during perimenopause, menopause, or midlife. This stage of life can bring physical, emotional and energetic changes that make it much harder to keep living in the same way. The strategies that worked in earlier years may no longer feel sustainable. The body may become more reactive to stress, emotions may feel closer to the surface, and old patterns may become harder to ignore.
This is not always a bad thing. Sometimes this stage of life highlights what has been tolerated for too long. It can bring awareness to the roles, habits, relationships, responsibilities, or expectations that no longer feel aligned.
In that sense, perimenopause and midlife can become a powerful threshold. It can feel uncomfortable, but it can also create an opportunity to reassess how life is being lived and what needs to change.
Future You work supports this process by helping you look not only at what is difficult now, but at what you are being invited to build next.
How Future You work fits into my sessions
In my treatment room in Bideford, North Devon, Future You work may become part of the recommendations after an Initial Session & Assessment.
This first session is not simply a stand-alone treatment. It brings together conversation, Clinical Reflexology, Reiki, energy work and intuitive guidance to help understand what may be showing up physically, emotionally and energetically.
From there, I talk through what I have noticed and what I feel would support you next. For some clients, the next step may be focused Reflexology or Reiki sessions. For others, the work may need to include simple anchors between sessions, such as journal prompts, meditation, reflection tasks or Future You work.
This is especially useful when a client is not only looking for relief, but is ready to begin moving forward with more intention.
Online Future You guidance
Future You work can also be done through online guidance sessions. This may be a good option if you are not local to Bideford, Barnstaple or North Devon, or if you feel you would benefit from focused conversation, reflection and practical guidance rather than hands-on treatment.
Online guidance sessions can be used to explore what is currently coming up, where you feel stuck, what patterns may be repeating, and what the next version of you may need. These sessions can include journal prompts, intuitive guidance, practical reflection, and small steps to work with between sessions.
This can be particularly supportive if you have already done a lot of healing or self-development work, but feel ready to move into a more forward-focused stage.
A simple place to begin
A useful question to start with is:
What does Future You need from you this week?
The answer does not need to be dramatic. It may be a small practical step, a different boundary, a change in routine, more rest, a conversation, a decision, or simply noticing where you keep abandoning your own needs.
Future You work is not about becoming a new person overnight. It is about building a relationship with the version of you who is no longer living from the same old patterns.
